Moonlighting ??

Published – 19th March 2025 – 2 Minute Read.

A Moonlighting Check is basically a way for employers to find out if an employee is working another job besides their main one. The goal is to make sure there are no conflicts of interest, and that the employee is following company policies. This check looks at things like whether the employee is working for another company, freelancing, or taking on any side gigs that could affect their primary job.

What does a Moonlighting Check involve?

  • Checking if the employee has a second job in addition to their main role.

  • Verifying if they’re doing freelance work or consulting on the side.

  • Making sure they’re not holding a position that could cause a conflict of interest.

  • Ensuring they’re not working for a competitor or anything that could harm their main employer.

  • Confirming they’re not doing something that could compromise their employer’s safety or security.

  • Looking at whether they’re working for a company that could hurt their employer’s reputation.

  • Checking if there’s a risk of leaking confidential info or infringing on intellectual property rights.

How is it Verified?

  • Employee Self-Disclosure: The employee may be asked directly if they’re working for another company or freelancing.

  • Social Media Check: Searching their social media accounts to see if they’ve mentioned any side jobs.

  • Employment History: Looking at their job history to spot any gaps or other companies they may have worked for.

  • Financial Records: Checking things like tax filings (Form 16, Form 26AS, ITR) to see if they have extra sources of income.

  • Compliance Check: Looking up their EPFO (Employee Provident Fund) records to check if they’re registered with more than one employer.

  • Directorship Check: Checking if the person is listed as a director or partner in any other companies.
